COWBOY FOR A DAY

Stockyards & Legends Edition

Step into the heart of Oklahoma’s living cowboy culture with a behind-the-scenes day at the Oklahoma National Stockyards, the world’s largest live cattle market, where cowboys, ranchers, and auctioneers carry on traditions that date back more than a century. Learn how cattle trading works today, hear real ranch stories, and experience a side of Oklahoma City most visitors never see.

After the tour, head to the legendary Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, an Oklahoma City institution since 1910. Here, you’ll sample lamb fries — a true cowboy delicacy — and enjoy a classic steak lunch in a dining room filled with history, photos, and generations of cowboy lore.

The afternoon wraps up at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, where the stories you encountered earlier in the day come to life through art, artifacts, rodeo legends, and Western films. From frontier settlers to modern cowboys, this iconic museum offers a deeper look at the people and values that shaped the American West.

By day’s end, you won’t just have learned about cowboy culture — you’ll have lived it.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • 10:15 AM Check In at the ‘Headin to Market’ sculpture

  • 10:30 AM Guided tour of the Oklahoma National Stockyards

  • 11:45 AM Lunch at Cattlemen's: Lamb Fries, Sirloin Steak with Salad, Homemade Rolls, a Side & Tea

  • 12:45 PM Depart for The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

  • 3:30 PM Tour ends: your guide will wrap up the day, say goodbye and express your appreciation — a standard cowboy gratuity is about 18%.

Oklahoma National Stockyards is an authentic, working cattle auction. It is not a shiny, manicured tourist attraction. Guests should be aware of the surroundings including moving trucks and trailers, horses, and a crew focused on caring for livestock and the efficient sale of livestock.

Getting to the auction arena involves walking up wood plank stairs to the catwalk — a 100+ yard/meter long, narrow, elevated, wood plank walkway. Included are all of the smells and sights of a livestock market.

Stockyards City is like a western style small town with shopping, restaurants, and historic highlights.
